It will work in the future
The city administration recently opened two more busway corridors, bringing to three the number of corridors in the capital, yet many residents remain skeptical about the busway's role in a future integrated public transportation system. The Jakarta Post asked residents for their thoughts on the busway.
Paulus Pandiangan, 37, is a manager at a housing developer in Tangerang. He lives with his family in West Jakarta:
I think the busway operator must stay true to its main goals; reducing traffic congestion in Jakarta and providing improved public transportation for residents.
But only three months after the launch of the first corridor, linking Blok M and Kota, I could already see the buses were being poorly maintained. For example, the air conditioners were not working properly.
Personally, I was glad to see two more corridors were opened because it gives people more of a choice.
This will get more people who usually drive to their offices to switch to the busway, which will mean fewer cars on the streets, especially during peak hours.
But what busway riders need is more comfort. They need good air circulation in the buses, and buses that are not packed to overcapacity.
Seno Setiawantoro, 37, works for a company in Mega Kuningan Jakarta. He lives in Cijantung, East Jakarta.
In my opinion, the busway project doesn't improve anything. They didn't build anything, they just took up parts of the already-too-narrow streets.
I am worried the two new corridors will make traffic worse along their routes. You can already see this happening in Rawamangun, East Jakarta. Congestion is already worse, especially at intersections. The busway operator has to do something about this.
But I do have to admit the busway gives Jakartans another option for avoiding traffic. I took the busway from Dukuh Atas in South Jakarta to the Telkom building on Jl. Medan Merdeka in South Jakarta for a meeting, and it only took 15 minutes.
